How to value a series of amounts
- Put one amount on each line, starting with today. A negative amount is money out.
- For uneven gaps, write the period and the amount, such as 6, 800.
- Set the discount rate for the present value. The rate of return is the rate that makes that value zero.
Questions
Why is there sometimes no rate of return?
If the amounts never change sign, no rate can make the present value zero. If they change sign more than once, more than one rate can do it, and the page says so.
Are the periods years or months?
You choose. A monthly series discounts each line by a twelfth of a year. The rate shown is still an annual rate.
