How background removal works on this site
What the beta cutout does, why the first run downloads a model, and which edges it still misses.
Background Remover finds a subject and clears the area around it, including a busy background. It is marked beta. The cutout runs in the browser after a model has been downloaded. The photo is not uploaded.
The first run
The first cutout downloads a model of about 44 MB, then keeps it in this browser so the next photo does not have to fetch it again. The model is checked against a known file before it runs. If it does not match, it is not used. The picture itself stays on the device.
What still looks rough
Fine hair, glass, smoke, motion blur, and a subject that fills the frame can leave a rough edge. A plain wall or a studio backdrop is the easier case. The photo editor’s cut tool is the one for a flat background and for a shape or brush cut. Download a PNG when you need the clear edge. A chosen colour is painted behind the subject.
